Are we too obsessed with the fair skin?

Looking for a suitable groom, making friends, being accepted in the society or getting ahead at work. For getting all these things done you need to have a lighter or rather fair skin. The demand of fair complexion from girls in our society is too damn high. Regardless of her qualification, mannerism, attractive personality and good family background, a girl is rejected or belittled on the basis of her complexion.
This has become a norm in our society. And our society's materialistic approach shows that we still live in the stone age where woman is just an entity. We as a society need to get away with this mindset. In this part of the world the 'gora rang' is used to measure the beauty. According to many people around the world, dark complexions are way more attractive. Then why are we so obsessed with the fair skin? Why we consider fair complexion as a real beauty?
Sometimes this discrimnation gets so severe that it results into depression and even suicide in some extreme cases. To make matters worse, we have fairness and bleaching creams in the market which sell like hot buns. This discrimination is further promoted by the advertisements that you can only be accepted in the society if you have a fair skin. As a result of this, girls often use expensive creams, home made remedies and also consult dermatologists and skin care centre without being sure of their authenticity and credibility.
It is high time, we should stop judging beauty by the color of the skin and see the other aspects like personality, style, qualification and manners. We should stop objectifying women and treating them as a commodity. They are not chammak challos and chikni chamelis. They have not been created for your entertainment and pleasure. If you cannot respect a woman then you do not deserve to be respected either.
